Why do I have spider veins on my face?

Spider veins are small, dilated blood vessels that appear near the surface of your skin. They often look like thin red or purple lines, webs, or branches.

These squiggles can form on various parts of the body, including your face. Facial spider veins develop due to a variety of factors, including:

Sun exposure

Exposure to the sun’s harmful UV rays can weaken blood vessel walls, leading to the appearance of spider veins on your face.

Genetics

If your family members have facial spider veins, you’re more likely to get them. Genetics play a significant role in the health and strength of your blood vessels.

Aging

As you age, your skin and blood vessels lose elasticity, making them more prone to damage and visible veins.

Hormonal changes

Hormonal fluctuations, especially during pregnancy, menopause, or while taking birth control pills, can contribute to the development of spider veins.

Rosacea

Rosacea causes redness and visible blood vessels on the face. It is often linked to spider veins.

Lifestyle factors

Prolonged sitting or standing, weight challenges, and certain lifestyle choices like smoking and excessive alcohol consumption increase the risk of spider veins.

What can make spider veins disappear?

One of the most effective treatments for facial spider veins is intense pulsed light (IPL) photofacial therapy.

This non-invasive procedure uses high-intensity pulses of light to target and eliminate spider veins without damaging your surrounding skin.

The light is absorbed by the hemoglobin in your blood vessels, causing the vessels to heat up, thus damaging the wall of the vessels, and collapsing the vessel.

Over time, your body naturally absorbs the treated veins, leading to clearer skin. Some of the benefits of IP photofacial include:

IPL treatments can also address other skin concerns in addition to spider veins, including sunspots, freckles, and redness.

What can I expect from IPL treatments?

You begin with a consultation with a skin specialist at HK Dermatology. During this visit, we assess your skin, discuss your concerns, and determine if IPL is the right treatment.

The number of IPL sessions needed varies depending on the severity of your spider veins and your skin's response to the treatment. For optimal results, most of our patients receive multiple sessions spaced about four weeks apart.

During your IPL photofacial, we use a handheld device to deliver light pulses to the targeted areas. You may feel a slight warming or snapping sensation as the light penetrates your skin. However, most people say the procedure is comfortable.

After your IPL session, you may notice some mild redness or swelling, similar to a light sunburn. These side effects usually resolve after a few hours to a couple of days.

Follow our aftercare instructions, which may include avoiding sun exposure and using gentle skincare products.
