General Dermatology FAQs
What services does HK Dermatology offer?
HK Dermatology provides medical dermatology, skin cancer treatment, and cosmetic dermatology in one office. Care ranges from acne, eczema, psoriasis, and rash treatment to Mohs surgery, superficial radiation therapy, injectables, laser treatments, and tumescent liposuction.
Who is Dr. Jeffrey Klein?
Dr. Jeffrey Klein leads HK Dermatology and is the physician who invented tumescent local anesthesia and the tumescent liposuction technique. His approach allows many procedures to be performed comfortably under local anesthesia in the office instead of under general anesthesia in a hospital.
Do I need a referral to see a dermatologist?
Many patients can schedule directly, but some insurance plans, especially HMO plans, require a referral from a primary care provider. Check with your insurance company or call our office at (949) 248-1632 before your visit so we can help you confirm what your plan requires.
What insurance plans do you accept?
We accept many major insurance plans for medical dermatology services. You can view the main carriers we work with on our insurance page. If you have a smaller plan, contact your insurer to confirm whether we are an in-network provider.
Is cosmetic dermatology covered by insurance?
Cosmetic treatments such as Botox, dermal fillers, and laser rejuvenation are elective and typically are not covered by insurance. Medically necessary care, such as skin cancer treatment or care for psoriasis and eczema, is often covered depending on your plan.
How often should I have a skin cancer screening?
Most adults benefit from a full-body skin exam once a year. Patients with a personal or family history of skin cancer, many moles, dysplastic nevi, or significant sun exposure may need more frequent checks. Your provider will recommend a schedule based on your history.
What should I expect at my first visit?
When you arrive, our front desk will help you complete any remaining paperwork. A nurse will review your medical history and concerns, and then you will meet with a provider to discuss your skin, a treatment plan, and next steps. Learn more on our new patient page.
How do I complete my new patient registration?
New patients receive an email link to register online through OnPatient. The link is valid for seven days, so check your spam or junk folder if you don’t see it. If you have trouble, you can complete registration in the office when you arrive.
Do you offer virtual appointments?
Yes. In addition to in-office visits, HK Dermatology offers virtual appointments for certain concerns. Call (949) 248-1632 to find out whether a virtual visit is appropriate for your skin condition.
What is Mohs surgery?
Mohs surgery is a precise skin cancer removal technique in which thin layers of tissue are removed and examined under a microscope during the same visit until no cancer cells remain. It offers high cure rates while preserving as much healthy skin as possible.
Is there a non-surgical treatment for skin cancer?
Yes. We offer superficial radiation therapy (SRT) for certain non-melanoma skin cancers, such as basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. SRT requires no cutting or stitches and may be a good option for patients who are not ideal surgical candidates.
What is tumescent liposuction?
Tumescent liposuction uses large volumes of dilute local anesthetic to numb and firm fatty tissue before fat is removed. Because it does not require general anesthesia, patients typically experience less bleeding, less bruising, and a quicker recovery.
How long do Botox and fillers last?
Botulinum toxin results usually last three to four months. Hyaluronic acid fillers generally last six to eighteen months depending on the product and area treated, while biostimulatory fillers such as Sculptra can last two years or longer.
Can you treat excessive sweating?
Yes. We treat hyperhidrosis with options that include miraDry, a non-invasive treatment that permanently reduces underarm sweat glands, as well as Botox injections and prescription therapies.
Do you treat children and teens?
Yes. We see younger patients for concerns such as acne, eczema, warts, and rashes. A parent or guardian must sign a consent to treat a minor before the appointment.
How can I send or request my medical records?
Medical records release forms are available on our patient forms page. Completed forms can be faxed to our office at (949) 248-9339.
What are your office hours?
