Request an AppointmentWhat Is RADIESSE®?
RADIESSE® is a dermal filler made of calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) microspheres suspended in a water-based gel. It is FDA-approved for correcting moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as the nasolabial folds. Unlike hyaluronic acid fillers, which work primarily by adding volume, RADIESSE® offers a dual benefit: immediate lift and correction, plus long-term stimulation of your body’s own collagen.
How Does RADIESSE® Work?
RADIESSE® is injected through a small needle beneath the skin. Right away, the gel adds volume and smooths wrinkles and folds. Over the following weeks and months, the CaHA microspheres act as a scaffold that stimulates natural collagen production. As the gel is gradually absorbed, your own new collagen helps maintain the results. In many patients, natural-looking results last a year or more, making the treatment both immediate and long-lasting.
Where Can RADIESSE® Be Injected?
- Smile lines: Also called nasolabial folds, the lines that run from the corners of the nose to the corners of the mouth.
- Marionette lines: The lines that run downward from the corners of the mouth.
- Corners of the mouth: Also called the oral commissures, which can make you look as though you are frowning when they turn down.
- Pre-jowl fold: The area on either side of the chin where skin can sag due to volume loss.
- Chin wrinkles: Horizontal lines on the chin that can distract from your smile.
- Cheeks and jawline: To restore contour and structure where appropriate.
Who Is a Good Candidate?
RADIESSE® is a great choice for adults who have moderate to severe folds, early sagging, or loss of facial structure and who want results that build and last. Because it is not a hyaluronic acid filler, it is generally not used in the lips or delicate under-eye area, where options like Volbella® or Restylane® may be better suited.
Immediate Results That Keep Improving
Most patients notice smoother folds and restored contour right after treatment. Over time, collagen stimulation improves skin quality and firmness. Mild swelling, redness, or tenderness may occur and typically resolves within a few days, and most people return to normal activities right away.
Side Effects and Safety
The most common side effects of dermal fillers include temporary bruising, redness, swelling, tenderness, and itching at the injection site. These usually resolve within several days to a week. A rare but serious risk of any filler is unintentional injection into a blood vessel, which can cause skin damage or, very rarely, vision problems. Seek immediate medical attention if you notice unusual pain, vision changes, skin blanching near the injection site, or signs of a stroke during or after treatment. Choosing an experienced medical team significantly reduces these risks.
Unlike hyaluronic acid fillers, RADIESSE® cannot be dissolved with hyaluronidase, which is another reason it should be placed by an experienced injector.
Other Collagen-Building and Volume Options
RADIESSE® pairs well with other treatments for comprehensive rejuvenation. Sculptra builds collagen gradually for subtle volume, Voluma® lifts the cheeks, Volux defines the jawline, and Morpheus8 tightens skin. Botox softens expression lines, and KYBELLA reduces fullness under the chin.
